I can see two different points of view;

..- Help others for free (and be remembered as helper)
..- Sell your knowledge to earn money (and be remembered as business man)

Everyone needs to choose in what group want to be.

One more thing I can feel, is that at one side of the Atlantic is more common to pay for everything.
At the other side, you can see more free software/Knowledge

It is not a rule, just some cases. There are exceptions at both sides.
