Unless you like tedious work and very good at taking delicate electronics apart
I wouldn't try this mod. However, you can remove the bottom plate and get a
bright green or red LED from Rat Shack and solder it to the switched 12V rail
at the volume ON/OFF switch. You can then bend the leads so it side
illuminates the display from the bottom. I think I inserted it between the
buttons and the main tuning. It's not overly bright but it does work and is
easy to do. Don't forget to put a 510 ohm (or so) resistor in series with the
LED!
