Sometimes things happen that you hesitate to believe, hence I'm asking
for other opinions here. At 00:30UTC, I got a listenable (though hashy) reception on 7370kHz that I can only find reference to as R.Dif. America from Ascuncion, Paraguay. The *highest* transmitter power I can find for this is 1,000 watts. Using an ICOM R-75 with a 60 foot longwire. I just started using the ICOM, and don't want to be fooling myself. Two male voices, doing what seemed to be a news/jocular commentary thing in Spanish (I speak it). Anyone? I've never made a catch that good before, and I don't want to do any victory jigs if I can't back it up. 1,000 watts is a lot of power with the right conditions ! I've never heard
of that station, but I have heard Paraguay (not recently) on 9735 before in spanish. I think you made a good catch ! I check in frequently on a frequency like that to see if it pans out consistently. I have been trying to catch Mauretania on 4845 and finally succeeded this afternoon around 00:00 utc. "Tony Meloche" wrote in message ... Two I know of off the top of my head are "Radio Tachira" at 4830, but it's in a very hashy frequency range (aren't all the tropicals, though.) An old favorite is "Ecos del Torbes" at 4980, but they are currently inoperative. The same man owns both stations. Many thanks, Tony. I'll pass along your message to an Arizona friend of mine
who has roots in Venezuela. She's distressed at what is happening to the country. She's 70 now, but when she was in college there, she tossed a Molotav cocktail at the then bad guys. :-) Anyhow, I'd just recently introduced her to shortwave listening. 73, Bill, K5BY |

Yes, the situation is tense in Venezuela... and is getting more
dangerous as U.S. officials believe that Chavez is supporting Middle East terrorists. There was an excellent report in U.S. News and World Report last week about the situation. Unfortunately, there is no real balanced information coming from that country on shortwave. Ecos del Torbes and Radio Tachira are owned by a Chavez supporter. The governor of the state of Tachira is also a "chavista" and can be heard with his rhetoric daily on Radio Tachira. There have been several reports here in Puerto Rico that an anti-Chavez group is setting up a shortwave or 50 kw AM station in the Dominican Republic. It's called Radio Bolivar, La Verdadera Voz del Libertador, according to the reports. The DR government is strongly opposed to Chavez, who cut off oil supplies a few weeks ago following President Hipolito Mejia's pro-U.S. stance. (By the way, he caused a great concern when he announced after his election in 2002 that he had U.S. citizenship.) Anyhow, anti-Chavez forces have been working to overthrow this administration from the DR. The situation on radio should be getting interesting in the next few months. |
