Just because they decide to dispose of trade-ins doesn't mean they
suck. It is a common practice. All the 2-way manufacturers do this with trade-in equipment, as is done throughout other industries as well. When they take a trade, there's no market for them in refurbishin/reselling. If they smash the surplus stuff they get tax benefits for the writeoff and reduced inventory. It is a business decision. If you want the discount for trade in, you give up your rights on the old piece of equipment...it is then their right to do what they want with it. And, if they want to stay in business (and mybe you/we want them to stay in business too?) then they want to get those old scopes (or whavever) off the street so the old stuff does not compete with them. If you want your old scope (or whatever) to go to a ham, or kid learning electronics, etc. (and this is a GOOD endeavor) don't trade it back with the manufacturer, give it to the kid or ham. BTW what new scope are you buying direct from Tektronix? On Mon, 10 Nov 2003 14:03:06 -0800, Frank Gilliland wrote: Tektronix is trying to manipulate the oscilloscope market. Today I learned from my local dealership that they are required by contract to destroy every scope which is traded in for a new Tektronix scope, regardless of age or condition. So if you decide to trade in that old scope for a Tektronix, know ahead of time that it is NOT going to end up in the hands of a ham, or of some kid learning and experimenting in electronics on a tight budget like I was thir... er, twenty years ago. No, Tektronix needs to raise their profits by destroying every used scope they can get their greedy little hands on, regardless of who feels the pinch! |
