[missed posting]
From: "BILL" yahoo e-mail block Sent: Friday, August 27, 2004 2:24 PM Subject: Recapping a HQ129-X I just received an old Hammerlund HQ-129-X which was given to me. I am wondering what is exactly involved in recapping this old radio. I have never done for an entire radio before, so please be detailed in the type of capacitors I should use for replacement, where to find them, etc. Plus any tips. Thanks, Bill Bill - You may wish to "Bookmark" (Netscape) or "Add to Favorites" (Explorer) some of these web sites with your web browser. FIRST, start with the manual, which is available on BAMA (you will need DJVU reader) ftp://bama.edebris.com/bama/hammarlu...hq129xpdf.djvu HQ-129-X Spec Sheets (2 pages - takes a bit of time to load) The schematic on the second page is actually too small for troubleshooting http://www.hammarlund.info/info/hq-129-x/129-x-1.jpg http://www.hammarlund.info/info/hq-129-x/129-x-2.jpg IF you are missing knobs, I believe that Leeds Electronics (NYC) actually has the crank tuning knob for the HQ-129-X (here is photo) http://www.leedselect.com/images-odd...rank-metal.JPG SECOND, take an inventory of the capacitors in your radio (schematic and inspection). THIRD, read the various re-capping web sites and references (below) FOURTH, come back and ask questions before proceeding! ----------------------------------------------------------- CAPACITOR WEB SITES for reference purposes Just Radios (Dave and Babylyn Cantelon) - ABCs of Capacitors http://www.justradios.com/captips.html http://www.justradios.com/capacitors.html The Radio Beginner - Replacing capacitors http://antiqueradio.org/recap.htm Small radio example of before recapping http://antiqueradio.org/art/farn03.jpg and after recapping http://antiqueradio.org/art/farn04.jpg Example of a total rebuild of a Hallicrafters S-38, photo documented by John King http://www.schmitzhouse.com/Johns_Electronics_08.htm Antique Electronic Supply - for other parts http://www.tubesandmore.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------- REBUILDING CAPACITORS Electrolytic Capacitors (lots of photos ! ) Early Television restorers http://www.earlytelevision.org/electrolytic.html Tim Reese on capacitors http://www.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/~reese/electrolytics/ R390A Capacitor rebuild http://r-390a.us/filter_capacitors.htm AeroVox - when you want new ! http://www.aerovox.com/ Drake AC-4 Power Supply Electrolytics http://www.wb4hfn.com/DrakeArticles/...Rebuilding.htm Rebuilding Paper Capacitors I only recommended this approach for historical restoration work - Smithsonian quality! http://www.earlytelevision.org/capreplace.html ---------------------------- Hope it helps g. beat |

Don't think that crank knob is for the HQ-129X. It looks like the one
for the BC-348?? Unlike most other Hammarlunds, the 129 has a smooth, smaller main and bandspead knob. The 120 and BC-779 (et al) have a smaller fluted knob. Larger knobs came in on the HQ-140. I'll also add Mouser for the caps. They're a bit cheaper, at times, than Antique. IF you are missing knobs, I believe that Leeds Electronics (NYC) actually has the crank tuning knob for the HQ-129-X (here is photo) http://www.leedselect.com/images-odd...rank-metal.JPG |
