This article says that there's a possibility that they knew the war was
over but chose to stay in the Philippines rather than go back to Japan.
It's possible; some American troops who after Vietnam found it
impossible to handle civilian life went to live in the jungles of
Thailand. I haven't heard the BBC in the last couple of days, but will
try tonight.
