Anyone know if a passive or active multicoupler is better. Looking at
the Stridsberg offerings. Passive is much cheaper but not sure about

The actives will make up for the signal power being halved in a 1 to 2
but they cost more money. If you want to hear a signal that is just
above the receiver noise floor before the splitter you might not be
able to hear it after the power is split through the passive splitter.
Weak signals through the passive splitter will sound a little noisier
depending on your radio. If you want a 1 to 4 you should consider an
active unit.

Go active. I use their 4 port multicoupler here.

Th heart is the Maxim MAX497, a very easy to implement 4X video buffer. One
of Jim's kits was just bought on EBay by a friend for $100 or so. Jim also
had them (kits) for sale at Dayton 2 years back.

Go active!
I built Jim's (W8ZR) 8 port active multicoupler and it's terrific. It has
some features that the Stridberg does not provide. I do not think he sells
the kits anymore however.

Signal loss in the passive will be between 3-5db per port. That's
about a halving. Depending on the gain of your antenna, that may be an
issue. It may not. For more than two ports, and for better isolation
between rigs, you'll need an active device.

I've used the splitters by ICE and by Stridsberg. Both are quite
adequate for the purpose. ICE has a bit more bottom end to the
bandwidth, but that's less of an issue than it sounds.

In practical terms, for most installations, one is as good as the other.
