Almost 10 years ago I got my Tech Plus license. Figuring I'd play it
safe, I put the original in a 'safe' place, and have copies of it here
and there. Now, I want to upgrade instead of simply renewing. Two
questions: Is a copy sufficient when I go for the exams? (That
'safe' place remains safe from ever finding it again, I think).
Yes.
Is
the 'Plus' in the Tech Plus, sufficient proof that I have taken and
passed the 5 wpm code?
Yes - even if the license is expired. Any Novice license document,
Technician
Plus license document, or before-February-14-1991 Technician license
document
carries credit for Element 1 (5 wpm code).
So all you need for a General is your Tech Plus license and a passing
grade on
Element 3 (General written).

Try to find the original though as it is always a good idea to take both the
original and a copy if possible. Be sure you have a spare copy at home as
the VEs will keep one to attach to your upgrade application.
