Froze me butt off I did even before sundown too. Better than the

roger roger!!

for the Marshall County WV ARES
bunch, atop the hill at Grandview Park overlooking the burg of
Moundsville. I'm not sure of the final tally yet but it should be in
the neighborhood of 26 to 27 k points. The CW duo was good for about
950 QSOs. We didn't manage a WAS on CW though--missed Alaska and
Hawaii.

This year was a sort of "shakedown cruise" for us'ns. Unfamiliar
little FT-847 xcvr (MP? Not!), untried antennas, untried team, etc. so
we just sorta dabbled at it for the jollies and educations. We were on
the air for only 10-11 hours out of the 24 but still managed to garner
over S&P 400 Qs. And that included some SSB ops too by golly.

Iron Man style. No computer, not even a memory keyer. Paper
log'n'dupe.

Pure 1960 contesting. Whatta pair of Luddites we is . .

Most memorable scene:

Late Sunday morning I'm milking 40 ssb at a great rate. Handed the mic
and chair to Jim. I wish I'd taken a photo of the look on his face.
But he sallied forth and kept the rate going. Yes he did.

Points is points, and I knew it was a setup anyway when I saw the
camera.

I asked him
when it was that he last operatd phone in a contest. "Six meters AM
days . . . "

Ya misunderstood - I meant "last time on Field Day". Which was 6 meter
AM - 1968 or thereabouts. Ol' Lafayette HA-460 and five elements at 50
feet at WA3CCP. Bacton Hill, PA - not far from where we were,
actually.

I've done 'phone SS since then.

And ya saw my SSB rate....

Yeah, now your goal for next year is 400 phone Qs. I'll help you
uncurl from your fetal position after it's over.

Worked KP4, KP2 and that ZF1 9A station. That one was a bit of a jolt.
They must have had a real blast.

Some serious setups out there. Saw a report of 1093 CW QSOs *just on
40 meters* by one of the 3A groups. K2/100 and a dipole IIRC. Yeah, we
worked 'em.

Didja like my QSK/CQ trick?

It's older 'n dirt, don't do it in real contests.

Figger a demonstrated 40 per hour station potential here and we gwan
go after you guys for *serious* next year so heads up Heil.

lessee...computer, some minor antenna work, a few odds'n'ends.....

Did anybody around here work Burke?

Burke who?

Thought so. Based on other threads around here he apparently spent the
weekend working the Put . . ah, never mind . .

that call just rolls off the bug and cuts through the Donald Duck
noises like a knife...

Sure does. I spent around the first quarter century of my career in
hamdom bumbling along with one of the lousiest callsigns ever issued.
So I put a lot of thought into what constituted a really punchy
callsign when the opportunity to came up grab one in 1977 or so. I'm
just now coming up on the breakeven point.
