This is a VOR identifier. A vor is used for navigation purposes. What
appears to be a continuous carrier is actually a signal that is electrically
rotated to provide bearing information. When tuned in with a VOR receiver
you can determine which radial of the station you are on. Cross referenced
with a second VOR an exact position can be determined. Most are co-located
with a DME which is distance measurement equipment allowing position to be
determined with a single station. I.E. I am 22 miles from the station on the
090 radial.

I was using the Aircraft band-scan feature on my Pro-90 when it stopped on
111.18 Mhz. It was just a carrier with a periodic morse code transmission
of the letters SDZ (... -.. --..). Anyone know what these letters could
mean?
Thanks
Luke
