Can anyone please recommend one reasonably
current good book for a novice to learn more
about the radio hobby in general?
For instance, a little radio frequency theory, some
basic antenna discussion, maybe some coverage
of amateur bands, etc.
Something technical enough to be a good shelf
reference.
Try ARRL's "Now You're Talking" at Radio Shack, Bob. This is the study
guide for the "Technician" Amateur Radio license, but the information easily
applies to radio in general. The book covers each of the things you
mentioned above, plus a lot more. If you want even more than that, get all
three Amateur Radio license study guides (Tech, General, and Extra).
