Yes I realize some of RS scanner's have been made by Uniden, as was there
one of their 10 mtr radio's years ago.
But the programming methods are, or at least used to be very different from
the Unidens.
Thanks for your input.............

I'm in the market for a digital scanner and I'm very loyal to

Uniden/Bearcat
for a lot of reasons. I need one that does 9600bps for our local system,

but
I'm told the Bearcats need some kind of tuning for them to operate

properly
on the APCO25 systems. Can someone fill me in on this?
I'm not a big fan of Radio Shack scanners, I've had a few and

they
don't impress me at all. My last one was a Pro-91, what a piece of

garbage.
Rx was horrible, programming was a different story. They make the
programming so complex, for something very simple.
I've recently been told the Pro-96 is a better scanner than the 296D, so

is
this just a personal opinion, or is it actually true.
Any information would be appreciated.

thnx

LOL, you realize that the PRO 91 you didn't like was
made by Uniden, don't you? I personally would take the
96 over the 296 anytime, for several reasons. First is
it's a better performer, RF wise. Quality control seems
to be something Uniden just hears about. I have seen
several 250's and 296's with unsoldered antenna and/or
speaker connections (the speaker conections being
unsoldered goes back all the way to the 235 for some
reason). A lot of them have the speaker wires stuck in
the epoxy they smear on the CPU to prevent "tampering"
and this makes taking the radio apart to fix the
unsoldered speaker connector a pain in the butt. Then
there's the battery pack nonsense, just use AA batts for
god's sake! I passed on the 235 and 245 for the battery
crap alone, not to mention all the repairs I made on
them due to factory screwups.

Uniden makes the PRO 94 BTW, it's ok, a 93 or 95 is a
lot better. IMO.

What is so hard about programming a 91 versus a 235 or
245? There is no Uniden branded equivilant to the 91, if
I remember correctly.

If I'm going to spend all that money for a digital
handheld, right now, it would be an easy choice, the 96.
