It doesn't work as well as an antenna optimized for a particular band or
bands. I chose it because it was a good compromise between wide band
receiving (for general scanning) and tri-band transmitting (it'll work 6m if
you tune the stinger). I later switched to a Diamond V2000 because I wanted
better performance in the VHF/UHF ham bands...but I did give up the wideband
receive capability with the V2000. I still think a decent discone is the
best choice for general usage, including VHF/UHF ham transmitting--it makes
a great choice for the beginner (Technician class) ham. Those who work with
specific bands a lot generally end up getting an antenna optimized for those
bands, though.

I found that the RS discone worked really well for 2m transmitting, and was
adequate for 70cm and MURS, but not great. I could never really tell on 6m
because I don't think there was much activity in my area on that band. It
was fine for the repeaters in my area, and it even did a decent job working
simplex on 2m.

How well does it transmitt compared to other antennas? How far out can
you get?
