From what I have owned and seen thus far, the only alternative to the
DX-398
(save for the ATS-909, which is the same radio), is the Sony 7600GR.
The Sony has the addition of synchronous detection, has excellent sideband
resolution, it's sensitive, smaller, and preserves batteries to a greater
extent than the DX-398.
If I were on a isolated island with my choice of a radio, not counting the
batteries (perhaps a solar cell supply, or the island is not completely
isolated, hypothetically you're transported to September of 1964, to avoid
meeting 70 something year old Ginger, Maryanne, and the Professor there
also,
but with my luck the women and the professor would all be gay. Hopefully,
the
gay professor makes power cells from coconuts, not expecting any other
kinds
of nuts in return.), I would prefer the DX-398 to the Sony.
I've owned MANY DX-398's and ATS-909's, and a few 7600G/GR's. I wasn't
really sure which I preferred overall, until I bought a DX-398 from Howard
Mercer that he did a few mods. This is the best portable I've owned! I can
pull in 80M hams full scale with the whip antenna. It also has a smooth
tuning mod, audio, light, an added RF amp, and AGC mods. You would have to
use it to believe it! I've been trying to get him to do the mods to my other
DX-398 but he's busy.

BUT, and I have a very large but here, the Sony would nearly be tied for
first
place.
I have owned the Grundig YB-400, bought at Radio Shack, and from 4 units,
did
not get one that worked 100%. This is probably due more to mishandling of
the
radios (possibly restocked defective radios) than the radio itself,
nevertheless, it has soured me to them.
I'm unaware of any other radios that have SSB and a great deal of features
in
this price range.
Regards.

Simone: I know you're right, Pee-wee, but...
Pee Wee: But what? Everyone I know has a big but. C'mon, Simone, let's
talk
about YOUR big but.

Ash: Klaatu verrata nectu.
Wise man: Again.
Ash: Klaatu verrata nectu.
Wise man: Again.
Ash: I got it, I got it. I know your damn words, right?
Ash: Klaatu verrata n... Necktie... Nickel... It's an "N" word, it's
definitely an "N" word!
Arthur: Are all men from the future loud-mouthed braggarts?
Ash: Nope. Just me baby... Just me.

Hello, I am looking for another radio similar, or equivilent to the
DX-398
what I want in it is great AM/LW reception, great shortwave radio
reception
and much better than the 398 portable. Also I am looking for
excellent FM
reception that has great selectivity, sensitivity and image rejection
also.
Can anybody give me some suggestions and experience with that
recommended
receiver, also what did you receive on the receivers you recommend
for to
check out. Thanks
I do perfer Grundig, Sangean, and ICOM, Drake
Radio Shack is not for the shortwave listener due to their poor
construction
of radio equipment and service , but still a great source to budget
minded and beginning shortwave listeners and intermediate shortwave
listeners.
