Rather odd query, but I have a Panasonic RF-3100 SW receiver and am
thinking of going for a reasonably priced upgrade. Would someone with
some experience using this particular receiver provide me with an idea
of a comparable (performance wise) receiver in today's marketplace?
I'd like to know at what level/$$ to start my search keeping in mind
this initial criteria would be limited to strictly performance issues
(ie. not ergonomics, other features not related to actual receiving
performance). I listen 50/50 BCB/Ute's.

OK, as far as I can gather from the web, the RF-3100 was a smaller
portatop with decent performance, though not outstanding - easily
overloaded when used on a longwire in Europe, halfway decent filters,
rather drifty for a PLL receiver; overall, a good entry level rx. Also
known as DR31 or RF-B30. As for a replacement, anything from a Sony
ICF-SW7600GR or Sangean ATS-909/RS DX-398 upwards. Maybe a Lowe HF-150
or Drake SW8 (preferably post-1996) might make a nice replacement.
(Actually, the Tecsun made Satellit 800 is based upon the SW8. General
construction isn't comparable to a real Grundig Satellit, though. The
power supply doesn't seem to be the best either, based on what I read on
satellit700.com.)
