Ridge vents can be constructed of a variety of materials, including roof
shingle material. I use a homebrew attic trap dipole run under my
nonmetallic ridge vent. I have a web page about the antenna at:

Looking to buy a house (in Michigan) and it has such a vent. An outside
antenna seems unlikely as it is a newer subdivision so I'll probably have to
