I use to own the DX 440 and it does have the chuffing sound. That clicking
sound is the chuffing. I found the radio to be excellant by portable
standards for Dxing. My only trouble was the radio ended up int the repair
shop 3 times from
what I am told is front end issues from static buildup. It has a quirky
procesor inside. Otherwise a great classic SW radio.
