I've been listening to a ham net in Jamaica on 14.283 since about 16:25Z
discussing the Cayman situation. It looks pretty bad. One ham is talking
about reports on an FM broadcast station in Jamaica getting cell phone
reports from Cayman, saying people are on the roofs screaming for help.
The
Jamaica hams can't make contact with Cayman. They are saying the Cayman
situation is worse than Granada.

The only info I heard about Jamaica is 16 deaths attributed to Ivan.

Traffic on 14.283 is intermittent but pauses are short at this time
(17:02Z).

I can hear it too up in NJ. It sounds hairy for sure... The population in
Grand Cayman is about 37,000. They are having a hard time of it right now
to say the least.

Michael, thanks for the info.. If you hear anything else let us know..

FYI:
The main part of Grand Cayman is filled with modern, multi-story office
buildings.
Building codes and inspections are quite strict.

In light of the above, I read the grim reports from the Caymans noted below:

".....................the sound of the weather is very distressing. coconuts
are flying off near by trees and hitting against her two story house. Plywood
boards are literally peeling off the windows and flying away in the wind. I
heard a crashing noise and it was coconuts lodging *into* her French door
upstairs.

"
witnessing intense
devastation/destruction outside. Roofs are flying off bldgs downtown,
windows of the Tower bldg are smashed in, roof and doors of bank of
America bldg are damaged or gone.
At times it has been hard for them to
see the bank of America bldg which is only a few feet across the street.
Trees are blowing around, and bits of bldg are flying through the air.

I was told that what they are watching is far worse than anything ever
shown on tv either on the news i.e. Frances, or a Hollywood creation.
"
also heard reports of intense
flooding of canals from North Sound. The hospital has flooded and
everyone is on the second floor and sadly their generator is no longer
working. A few hours ago (prior to the worst part of the storm
hitting,) it was reported that cars along southsound road were
"floating" and that the sea was coming under the door of houses located
on the beach.
"
Ivan was 60 miles west of Grand Cayman, traveling to the west at 10 mph,
according to a National Hurricane Center Advisory.

There are unconfirmed reports that part of the capital, George Town, is
³gone², that roofs are blowing around in the streets of George Town, and
that the hospital has been badly damaged, or is possibly also ³gone².

"Two British ships are reported to be 250 miles behind Ivan, waiting to come
into port to come to Caymanıs aid. The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas
Territory (colony).
"

I was lucky enough to travel down there a while back, lovely people in a
lovely place.

Thank god for the 2-way radio network ( Cell Phones and repeaters) Ham
operators and whatever else helps us through emergencies.

Hope everyone down there is safe through out all this;

Dan / USA

There is a ham net on 14.265 getting info to & from the Caymans.
Unfortunately, the net controller will put you asleep or drive you crazy
with his ",,,ugh...ugh...ummmmmmm..."
