We hams are no longer viewed by any significant authority as anything more
than a motley collection of hobbyists. Sorry: fact of life. Gripe if you
wish. It won't change the truth. In fact, many authorities wish we would
disappear. We are, at best, "overbearing, unqualified tinkerers," and at
worst "overbearing, unqualified tinkerers." Well, we could leave off the
word "tinkerer" as the majority of hams have no ability nor desire to
tinker. We are in no way, speaking generally, that 'pool of qualified
electronics techs' the FCC mentions, although we seem to think we are.
Those days are gone.
