Probably relays (often supplied in tube sockets), and probably with
high-pressure nitrogen and maybe mercury-wetted contacts inside -- don't cut
one open to see :-)
In this case it is probably a frequency-dependant relay for a selective
calling system.
Did anyone make transformers in that configuration?
Yes! Altec did, as did lots of other folks.
