Some Jewish hams will not operate the radio on the Sabbath or other
holy days. Others will. It's up to the individual to make the
determination of what one will or will not do on those days. We
don't have a Pope or equivalent to make that determination for us.
I am an educated and practicing Jew (Conservative/Masorti Movement)
and I have no problem working ham radio during those hours where I
am not conducting or attending services in the synagogue or doing
other family-oriented things. It is, after all, the rest and
relaxation which is the object of the Sabbath. It's not "business".
Others may feel differently and that's OK for them as long as they
do not try to impose their interpretation on me.
As far as the British --- no argument from me !!

We had this very subject come up not too long ago, and it caused such
acrimony that the item finally worked its way up to the ruling General
San Hedrin Council, of which I am the Chief Scribe. Being uneducated
and from a liberal blue state, I decided that ham radio operation was to
be permitted only by uncircumcised Jews on even days of the month and
then only if family-owned business had first been tended to. Now, if they
work for national corporations, then they were to follow the odd day
schedule, which was first promulgated by Jewish members of the ARRL
in 1934. The thrust of my ruling, which rode in on earlier rulings first
made during The Six Day War in 1967 was for most Hasdic Jews to
not feel as though they were under any particular pressure to operate
their ham radios, if the 31st day of the month fell on a Saturday. As for
me, I prefer freeband operation, where they accept my Jewish
persuasion. Anyway, like I told them at temple last Saturday, y'all just
have a good time. That's the whole point. Oh, and I just elmered
Moshe into ham radio and already he has dxcc. These extra lite hams
just don't appreciate the old days.
