Scott, you're usually a sensible poster but the usenet censors are all
over themselves trying to figger out the "big zener" approach. I have
it on personal authority that 'they' will allow you another stab at this
question. I think they want to see the term "RF" in the answer.
Well, if you're using the 01A as a reference voltage for a regulator, I
don't see any difference between it and the zeners.
Of course, you could be using it as a noise source... and the 01A does
spew out huge amounts of RF trash. Even more than the zeners will,
and the zeners are noisy as hell.

According to RCA and GE an 01A is a triode used as an amplifier or a
detector diode. They were around before dirt.
