Default Palstar or Icom

I do have both the Palstar R30 and the Icom R-75, with the R75's MW
attenuator removed.
Both receivers are very good. Out of the box, the Palstar has the same
sensitivity as the Icom unit has after it is modified.
The audio from the R30 is much cleaner sounding than the R75. One of
these days I will do the audio mods on the R75.
A point to consider about the R75..............the radio's internal 5V
regulator is dissipating too much power. The stock Icom power supply
unit has an output voltage of close to 18V. This means that 13V is
being dropped across that 5V regulator.
I didn't know which radio I liked better, so I bought both of them. If
you like features and decent performance, the R75 is a good choice. If
you are looking for better audio quality and better signal handling
with fewer features, the R30 is a good choice.
I measured the overload point on the R75 at 100mV, while the Palstar
R30 doesn't overload until you apply 1V of RF at the antenna input.
Does this mean that the R75 is not very good? Of course not! The R75
overload point is in the same range as the Lowe HF150, HF225 and the
HF250. No complaints about the overload figure.
In conclusion, if you like the signal handling characteristics/sound of
tubed receivers, you will like the Palstar R30. My favorite? You
guessed it.........the R30!
