I was always taught to use a good tight wrap of friction tape, and
cover it with a good tight, clean (no fingerprints) wrap of regular
electrical tape. I've seem some of those last a good long time.
Haven't played much with the self-sealing plastic-ish tape they
sell for weathersealing.
