You're right - the chances are it is your antenna. The simplest way
to improve it is just to add wire. The best would be a random length
of wire outside and as high and long as you can get it, but even
fifteen feet indoors will help.
Antennas work better at specific frequencies, but you haven't
specified any. That's ok, for reception just a random length should
improve things dramatically. If there is an antenna connection on the
radio, connect it to that (be sure to strip the wire where you connect
it if you use insulated wire). If there is no antenna connection, you
should be able to improve things by simply connecting the wire
(stripped if it's insulated) to the extendible antenna which protrudes
from the radio.
