very nice of Darryl to respond so quickly, but I think he dodged a lot
of my questions/concerns::

Hello,

I have heard and read many negative reviews concerning HD/IBOC,
especially, how it
will negatively affect nightime AM DXing. I live and Maryland, and
very much enjoy
listening to Scott Sloan, but I am very concerned that it will be very
difficult, because
tests with WOR, in New York, running HD/IBOC caused much interference
with WLW.
Also, I understand that an HD/IBOC exciter, and possible expensive
modifications
to antenna systems (to modify the bandwidth), along with a yearly fee
to iBiquity, makes
this technology very expensive. Tests with daytime IBOC have caused
much
adjacent-channel interference, poor quality transmissions from the
digital sidebands
dropping out (it's all-or-nothing with digital), and poor penetration
and coverage of the
digital signal. Luckily, nightime IBOC, has not yet been approved and,
hopefully, never
will. Was your station pressured by Clear Channel and iBiquity to run
IBOC ? Also, I
have read that a number of stations have turned off HD/IBOC, because
off listener
complaints and adjacent-channel interference. I hope your station
doesn't
"shoot iteself in the foot", by running HD/IBOC, thereby cutting off
many AM DXers !

Actually, one of the first IBOC test stations years ago was 700WLW.
The system has been improved a lot over the years. The interference
comes from the digital signal being on the sidebands of the main
carrier. One of the things that Clear Channel has done has required
the AM's roll off at 5k, which actually is a good thing reducing
interference and allow the smart stations to make the signal more dense
and loud.

You are correct with the issues in digital transmission...it's either
there are not and this with lower power stations may still be an issue.
As far as antenna modifications for bandwidth, being a non-direction
station 700WLW is OK with minor issues. We did have the HD signal on
for a few weeks a few months ago and did turn it off because of
processing issues. The new equipment has arrived and at some point we
will begin experimenting with HD again.

Although, there are problems, no pain...no gain. We live in a digital
world. We all need to embrace the future...or it will run us over.
