Default Homebrew tubes in "200 Meters & down"?

Bill,

I actually have the paragraph from page 63 in 200 Meters and Down copied and
set in a frame with a picture once run in QST of G5BD, arm amputee, sending
code while peddling a generator. The two snapshots from our past certainly
capture the essence of what ham radio used to be. Sadly.

ZUT,

Remember the story about the intrepid lad who gathered scrap glass and
melted it down to make his own tubes? I think I saw this in the ARRL's
"200 Meters and Down" book, but now I cant find the page. Anyone know
where in the book this gem is hidden?

Thanks,
