how do i know if the R71A that i am consiering purchasing has jus the
notch filter or the PBT/notch? I can tell you this the unit says only
notch above the pot. on the faceplate, but i read somewhere that the
unit could still have PBT even though it only says notch. also the
serial number is 03xxxxx.
any r71 experts that could help me out. if it doesn't have the notch
could it be modified? also what is the difference between the r71a, d
and e?

thanks in advance, john

If the PBT is installed, the knob that says 'Notch' will be a
concentric double control.

If you do not have PBT installed, the circuitry is still on the
mother board, and with a service manual, and a handful of parts, you can
restore PBT by simply installing the parts as described on the board.
You may even be able to find the PBT faceplate. ICOM still had a few in
stock as of a couple of years ago.

The difference between R71A, D, and E are compliance with bandplans
limited by law in other regions around the world. R71A is the American
version, without deleted segments of the bands.

The one thing you cant get is the PBT/Notch knobs. I tried for almost
two years with no luck.

I wouldn't bother with one that doesn't have PBT. There are tons of them
out there in good shape with it.
