The djvu format has a number of advantages over pdf. File sizes are
usually much smaller, you can edit, add or extract individual pages
from the files with the free (obsolete) Solo 3.1 software and pdfs can
be converted using one of the free online services, which can also
index files created from jpg formats using OCR compiled from graphic
scans of manuals.

It might be worth trying a different viewer(s). Simon suggests DjVu Solo
3.1, which is what I use. You can also create DJVU files with it. You
can get it from
http://www.tuberadio.it/utils.htm

Impress (and annoy) your friends by sending them DJVU files instead of
JPGs and PDFs!
