IBOC : HD-Radio May Suck -but- It Is The Suckers
That Will Make It a Success ! -by- RHFhttp://groups.google.com/group/rec..radio.shortwave/msg/0ce2564e2517a12c

HD-Radio : May Suck -but- The Suckers Will Make It a Success !
*.
Just be Honest and Think About It for a Minute.
[ Thinking With-In The {Radio} Box ]
*.
To the Average {non-technical} AM/FM Radio Listener :
*.
Who Lives in a Major Metro Area; and
*.
Listens only to a Few (3~4) or Several (6~8) of
*.
Their Local AM/FM "Analog" Radio Stations;
*.
For Now IBOC AM/FM "HD" Radio has Changed Nothing.
*.
Cause - They can still hear their good old "Analog"
Local AM/FM Radio Stations inspite of IBOC.
*.
IBOC - Passes the First Test of "Dual Mode" Analog and
Digital AM/FM Radio Reception : People being able to
Still Hear the Analog Mode. [No Diruption in Their Present
Analog Radio Listening.]
*.
Sometime in the 'future' these Average Metro Area
AM/FM Radio Listeners with have the Need -of- 'feel'
the Want and Need to Buy a New "HD" AM/FM Radio.
*.
Note - Maybe a heard an New "HD" AM/FM Radio in
a Rental Car -or- They bought a New Car and it came
with an "HD" AM/FM Radio -but- They Liked what they
Heard on the "HD" AM/FM Radio. So Now the Want
to have "Their Own" *"HD" AM/FM Radio in their Home
to show "Their Family and Friends" I GOT AN "HD"
AM/FM Radio.
*.
FWIW : This Is The Natural Consumer Process of :
feel it Want It NEED IT !
*.
So- These Average Metro Area AM/FM Radio Listeners
Will Buy a "HD" AM/FM Radio.
*.
IBOC - Passes the Second Test of "Dual Mode" Analog and
Digital AM/FM Radio Reception : People Transitioning to
the Digital Mode. { The Process Has Begun Slowly and
over the Next Decade : It Will Continue To It's Conclusion
With AM/FM "Digital" HD-Radio 'Being' the Primary Mode
of AM/FM Radio Reception by the Vast Majority of Radio
Listeners. }
*.
IBOC AM/FM HD-Radio Will Happen For Two Reasons :
* Most Radio Listeners {Audio Consumers} Will Hear No
Change in What They Hear With HD-Radio {It Ain't Bad}
* Some Radio Listeners {Audio Consumers} Will Hear a
Change "Think It Sounds Better" with HD-Radio {It's Good}
*.
change happens, Change Happens. CHANGE HAPPENS !

1 - Simulcasting AM Radio Sound on the FM HD-2 Channels
2 - Transitioning AM Radio Stations to an Expanded FM HD-Radio Band.

You talk as though IBOC is the only game in town. It is not.

It remains to be seen whether IBOC can overcome its own, endemic
problems.
However, even If it does, then it faces a far tougher challenge:
having to
compete, head on, against satellite radio, Wimax, etc.--media that
offer
vastly more, and better, content. Of course, there is the tired old
refrain
that, since IBOC will still be "free" radio (actually, that remains to
be seen),
it will still have some role to play. However, before long Wimax will
strike
most listeners as "as good as free" insofar as it will only require
equipment
and internet access that people will already have, for independent
reasons.
The choice for consumers then boils down to "Do I want very limited,
and
for the most part crappy, programming or do I want an ocean of
programming
options, many of which are superb and even tailored to my specific
tastes?"

The power of the free market should not be underestimated. Line up all
the
powerful corporate/government interests you like and put them
squarely
behind IBOC. Their money and influence won't make a whit of difference
if
IBOC is unable to compete effectively in the marketplace. With IBOC's
crappy, constrained programming as an unavoidable weight around its
neck,
it's hard to see how it can do anything but sink. Putting IBOC into
the free
market is like sending a two year old into Falluja.

- The moral of the story is just this.
- At the end of the day, it all boils down to content, content,
CONTENT.
- And this is where IBOC will always come up short. Always.

JW 32,

All your Points are Valid -but- Those 'issues' are not based
on IBOC {Digital} AM & FM Radio Technology or for that
matter old Analog AM & FM Radio Technology.

Those "Issues" have their foundation in the Corporate Media
Management of the Content being Programmed on the AM
& FM Radio Stations for the American Public to Listen to
on Free Over-the-Air Radio.

Technology only 'Sells' Radio {The Medium} as an Adjunct
to the "Content" : FM-Stereo Gained in Market Share;
because the Sound of Stereo Music 'complemented' the
Sound of the Music {Content} Being Played and the increase
in the Number of FM-Stereo Music Stations playing an even
greater variety of Music Programming the Specific Radio
Listeners Wanted-To-Hear.

AM 840 (kHz) KMPH in Modesto, CA just changed it form
"Music with Class" to Talk Radio "The PATRIOT" with a
target audience of 50+ -WHY- Because in a Market with
20 or more AM Radio Stations to Listen To : The Over-50
Group is 25% of the Population; and the Over-65 Group is
12% of the Population; and both Groups make up even
more larger Percentages of the Radio Listening Public.
Plus AM 840 KMPH "The PATRIOT" has enough Local
Talent and Programming on the Air {Local Content} to
make it 'sound' like a Local Radio Station.

One-in-20 is 5% and when a Radio Station has a 'chance'
to Define itsels as "The Radio Station for the Over-50-Crowd
it is looking at a better than even Market Share with a
'potential' 2~3 Multiple. Most/Many of the 'other' Radio
Stations are going after the Prime Sellable Demographic
of 18~35 Years for Advertisers and Revenue. But if you
Listen to KMPH you will hear Advertisers with Products
that are Used and Needed by those Over-the-Age-of-50
and that to is a good consistant source of Advertising
Revenue for a Radio Station.

The same goes for the FM Radio Band and FM Radio
Stations : Wherever there is 20 or more FM Radio Stations
in a Metro {Serving a Community} there is room for one
of those Radio Stations to be "The Music Radio Station"
for the Over-the-Age-of-50 Group. Plus there are a large
number of Advertisers with Products and Services that
are Used and Needed by those Over-the-Age-of-50 and
that are a good consistant source of Advertising Revenue
for an FM Music Radio Station.
