The phones suppled with the Instructograph were common
magnetic phones as made by perhaps a dozen manufacturers.
Phones of this sort were made and sold up to perhaps the
1970s. They were never used for wire telegraph work only for
radio telegraphy. I seem them very rarely at the local ham
swap meet but eBay would do better. You will also need a
key. Most of the keys supplied by Instructograph appear to
have been made by Signal Electric Co., I had one which
disappeared in some move. These keys do not have circuit
closers on them. The Instructograph appears to be identical
to an earlier practice machine called the Teleplex. They use
wind-up phonograph motors to drive them. I have no idea of
what sort of oscillator Instructograph supplied, they don't
appear in the ads but undoubtedly they had something
available, maybe even just a buzzer.
Late magnetic phones are nearly identical to the early
ones so one must be careful not to pay collectors' item
prices for something that is just old.
Some brand names are Trimm, Brandes and Cannon-Ball
(same company), Utah, Western Electric, Baldwin (valuable),
and others. Check eBay, I rarely see old phones of any type
at the local ham swap meets.
