How about an automatic PINdiode attennuator. I've seen one in a magazine.

Ahh okay, that's one possibility… I could conceivably default to
fairly high attenuation, then ramp it up until it hits the desired
mark.

is one such circuit I dug up. I'll have to delve into the theory a
bit more to see if I can make it work.
