These devices, called 'sonobuoys' were designed, engineered and
manufactured by Sparton in Jackson, Michigan since the mid-50s.

In 1956, the company adopted its brand name – Sparton – as its
company name. By then its emphasis had shifted to defense work with a
Navy contract to produce sonobuoys, devices used to detect enemy
submarines. They would be the backbone of Sparton's business for
decades.

By 1975, Sparton had produced more than 1.5 million sonobuoy units
and as Cold War tensions continued into the 1980s, the need grew even
more.
