A couple of months ago, Radio-mart's alter-ego, gottahaveit1995 bought a
radio from me on ebay, the same radio I bought from him 3 years previous. When I first got it, she smoked and looked worse (repainted, not original color) than described. Eventually I got it running and enjoyed it for those years. As I said, Martyn bought it back ( probably doesn't remember it), so for the last couple of months, I've been checking his sales for it and sure enough, there it is for sale. Of course I have no problem with someone buying to resell, but the non-factual things said: 1: Pristine shape....Not! Certainly not since it's been repainted in something other than original colors 2:Chassis shines.... You can see the rust in the picture if you look closely 3: Purchased from 2nd owner who had it for 20 years before it was put into dry storage...I've already mentioned this lie 4:Main & bandspread dials work perfectly smooth....Main dial had backlash and was annoying to use Anyone bidding on this will get a nice radio, but far from what is described. All you buddies of his need to rethink your criticism of those of us who take the time to point out this persons activities. http://cgi.ebay.com/Hallicrafters-SX...QQcmdZViewItem |

Martyn sez.... "I have replaced every tube with a new old stock tube set
which cost me over $130 so I know the tubes are all perfect." ![]() Yes, I do, and your point is? I think his point is - you most likely sold it with good tubes already since you are a technically savy amateur, and an honest man wouldn't sell a radio even to Radio Mart with bad tubes in it. Radio Mart didn't need to test the tubes, and certainly didn't put $130 worth of new tubes in it. So for him to even post that it needed new tubes is essentially saying you sold him a basket case. I hope that was his point, but it seemed not to be that way. If I'm
wrong, I apologize. I seriously doubt Martyn retubed it, I have an interior picture of it & it all looks the same, considering how dishonest he's been so far in his ad, I REALLY doubt he did anything to it. i've been looking for an sx 42 for about a year. i was eyeballing this
very unit and i thank you for this most informative post. as i've watched these get knocked down for what i consider inflated prices, i thought i would just ask: these are popular units. what are they worth? i know what dachis sez, but that's years ago and pre-E-prey. people seem to bid to any level to obtain one, well past where i am willing to go. i am talking about a working (safely, sensitive all bands) unit w/original paint (not perfect) and some dings/scratches. it would need alignment, some cleaning and maybe a couple of better tubes swapped in. slight rust spotting chassis ok. in other words, should i quit looking? ab |

Instead go to hamfests. Get the word out to anybody you know who might keep an eye out for you. And join a couple of the moderated forums where civility reigns and the posters would rather sell to other enthusiasts for a lesser amount than put their boatanchors up for auction and hope for big bucks. |

yeah, i had missed due to various complications, the couple of big
summer fests near me, and they are now asleep until spring. and yes, a 28a was on the long-term list too. thanks for confirming my impression, and that if i go to the right fest i will still see the old gear. it does seem only the sellers are enthusiastic about ebay in recent years...... esp for this kind of gear... and my feeling was they may have been sucking the market outside ebay dry. passed on my wishlist to my repair guru and parts source, and of course, here i am in a forum full where 'civility reigns.' ab Keep looking, but not on e***y, where the price-jacking wars you describe are commonplace with items currently deemed desirable, like the SX-42 (and its repackaged equivalent, the SX-28), certain Collins equipment, and various others. ![]() the SX-42 (and its repackaged equivalent, the SX-28), How did you come to the conclusion these were equivalent? Having owned and restored both I am curious. The SX-28 covered up to 43 mhz, the 42 up to 110mhz The style was completely different With the exception of the twin 6v6 audio output the tube lineup was different (The 42 used many loctals instead of octals) The tuning mechanisms were very different Even the Hallicrafters logo changed with that model. FWIW I would take a 28 over a 42 any day |
