How can someone buy copyright on something that is public domain? Have you seen the prices he is charging? Steve H |

Steve H Well, we'd have to know if the manuals were ever copyrighted to begin with, and if the ones prior to 1962 were renewed. Proving otherwise would cost a bit, unfortunately. His prices were lower that most of the other manual dealers. Not that I like the whole deal myself.. Pete |

Exactly where do you get that from? The manuals are still in copyright and due to the efforts of the Disney Corporation, probably will be for another 100 years. The former owner of the copyrights did not stop people from selling photocopies, or distributing images but that does not affect copyrights. In fact, if the owner was not aware of the infringment, they can still sue. All it means is that the new owner can not prosecute people who HAD permission in the past. By US law, if they did not have written permission, they can be prosecuted or sued for copyright infringment. Since the new owner obviously was never informed of prior infringment, he has four years to sue. Check with a lawyer how specializes in copyright infringment cases, I am not a lawyer of any kind. In the US, it's around 100 years, going back retroactively to anything that was still under copyright. I think the start date had to do with the first full length Disney film. Geoff. -- Geoffrey S. I believe for pre 1962 the copyrights had to have been renewed. All of this was hashed over on the Heathkit Yahoo! users group for those who want to peruse the subject. The new owner admitted a few of the manuals weren't copyrighted (AT-1, etc.) but no definitive list was given. FWIW. Pete |
