The biggest challenge facing many managers is finding, developing, and growing on-air people who will attract large audiences and lead your stations to greatness. DON'T MISS THE NAB! In a question/answer forum, including case studies, you will hear respected and experienced broadcast managers who've all had years of success developing talent.. Dan Vallie of Vallie/Richards, Rod Arquette program director of KSL Salt Lake City, and Joyce McCullough, General Manager of the Miller Media Group in La Salle, IL, will all be joining me for this discussion. If you cannot be with us in San Diego, here are a few ideas you may find useful in finding, growing and developing air talent. Geller Media International Secrets to Powerful Radio Talent Development. HIRE RIGHT: 1. Know what you want: Don't hire an apple when you really want an orange. (Example, it's not fair to hire a strong personality and then shut him or her "down" with tight or restrictive formatting.) NOTE: For on air personalities and producers: This also means you need to take responsibility and make certain this "casting" is right for you. Don't take a job that puts your "foot "in a "wrong shoe." If you are looking for a gig, and the one you are offered isn't really right for your skill set or talent, don't take THAT job! 2. How do you find these people? Look beyond the obvious, go beyond hiring someone who just sounds polished and professional. Find great storytellers. People who have original thought, are good listeners, with a sense of humor. If you cannot find a broadcaster, look for people who are smart, passionate, comfortable communicators, real personalities. People who like to talk, have interesting things to say, and are also good listeners. We've had luck developing people from a myriad of professions other than broadcasting for radio including lawyers, teachers, psychologists, ministers, priests, writers. Many have become successful and powerful broadcasters. We can teach a talented communicator how to work in radio. This includes introducing them to the target audience we are trying to reach, showing the potential on-air personality HOW the listener uses radio, and how intimate and personal the medium of radio is. (eg: Talk directly to the ONE person listening, the importance of describing visuals, etc.) After they've tried it, we aircheck in a one-on-one coaching session, using specific criteria, while playing back the program. This helps each individual move up to the next level of performance. AIRCHECK CRITERIA: 3. Things to look for include: What journey did this show take you on that you could not have gotten to on your own? What was new? Was this funny? Did it have a talkable topic that listeners could discuss with others when the radio went off? Was it boring? Did you feel the time passed quickly or did it drag by? Did the show hold up a mirror and reflect life? Do you "know" the presenter from hearing the show? Would the listener feel connected to the talentr? Was it fun? Informative? Were any risks taken? Were there any surprises? Were you entertained?
