What is the purpose or what does a tone does in a radio? Can an export radio
(10m converted) be installed a tone? I saw a 10 m hand held, with a 88mhz tone. Does this helps with reach and transmission to another radio which has the tone? Can anyone explan a little bit on this? |

![]() Alan, It sounds like you're talking about a CTCSS, or 'tone squelch' accessory. If so, then, no, it doesn't do anything with range or signal strength. It's just a way of turning off reception of any signal that doesn't have the 'tone', sort of like having a private line instead of a party line with telephones. The tone is like a 'key' that will open the 'door' to another radio that's using a 'tone squelch' so they don't have to listen to everything else on a channel. 'Doc |

Until it opens; then you hear everything even
those who are not supposed to be on your "private" channle. The2x4 "'Doc" wrote in message ... 'tone squelch' so they don't have to listen to everything else on a channel. 'Doc |

only if they're keyed up at the same time as someone with the tone
is... otherwise, they go byebye... -SSB The2x4 wrote: Until it opens; then you hear everything even those who are not supposed to be on your "private" channle. The2x4 "'Doc" wrote in message ... 'tone squelch' so they don't have to listen to everything else on a channel. 'Doc |

What is the purpose or what does a tone does in a radio? Do you mean the CTCSS tone? This is like a squelch. It cuts out the sound until someone transmits with the same tone on their system. Can an export radio (10m converted) be installed a tone? You could fit CTCSS on any radio, including CBs. I saw a 10 m hand held, with a 88mhz tone. Do you mean 88Hz... 88MHz is not quite a "tone". Does this helps with reach and transmission to another radio which has the tone? It will not improve distance or received sound in any way. All it does is keep your speaker quiet until the correct person transmits. Unlike a normal squelch, it is not opened up by any signal above a set strength, it only opens if the correct tone is received. The tone transmitted is a low frequency audio signal. The level of this tone is low enough, so that you will not hear it, but it can still be picked up by the internal circuits. This is really intended for services where a frequency is shared by several people or groups, each of whom wish to use their system privately without the others bothering them. While it could be fitted on CB, it would just defeat the object of CB - a "community" type system where anyone can talk to anyone. Regards, Peter. |

Can it be fitted to a specific channel or does it takes all the channels
once it is installed? "Brainbuster" wrote in message news:3f1f7f1f.0@entanet... Alan Lansburger wrote in message ... What is the purpose or what does a tone does in a radio? Can it be fitted to a specific channel or does it takes all the channels once it is installed? It is fitted in the audio circuits and has nothing to do with channel, so will work on all channels. Although, it can be switchable, so you can use it when you want or switch it off at any time, on any channel. Think of it as a squelch. The difference is that a standard squelch will open up when a signal is strong enough, but the CTCSS will only open up if they are sending the correct sound. Also, it needs no adjustment - it is either on or off. Regards, Peter. |

can anyone else hear you when you reply to someone else that has a ctcss
tone, or just the people who have the tone installed in the radio can hear each other, sort of like encrypted type comms? "Brainbuster" wrote in message news:3f28b75a.0@entanet...
