Default SWR question: shorten antenna

Ahoy.

I have a new CB and a new Wilson Lil Wil antenna. The instructions with
the Lil Wil say to:

Check SWR on channel 1
Check SWR on channel 40
If channel 1 has a lower SWR than channel 40, cut 1/4" from the antenna
top and measure again...continue until the SWR for channel 1 and 40 is
about equal.

Channel 1 gave me a nice low 1:1.4
Channel 40 gave me a nasty 1:2.8

So I snipped off 1/4" and measured again.

Channel 1 gave me 1:1.3
Channel 40 gave me 1:2.5

So my question is, snipping off that 1/4" really improved the channel 1
SWR but only dropped channel 40 a little bit. How many 1/4" increments
am I gonna hafta snip before these two equal out?

Also, I'm guessing that at some point, channel 1 is going to start to go
back up (instead of improving)...should I stop there and live with
whatever the higher channels are displaying? Rather than continuing to
snip until 1 and 40 are about equal?

Thanks,

Kahuna

Keep clipping, chn 1 may go up, but even if it goes up don't go over 1.5,
then depends on where you will talk more, 1-20 or 20-40 try to keep that
section below 1.5.

Anything below 1:1.5 is fine. I'd say, keep snipping. Even if you use
the lower channels most, you should keep clipping at least until you
get channel 40 under 1:2 so you don't hurt anything on the rare
occasion you do want to go all the way up to 40.

I misread his post. The Little Wil's are notorius for wicked SWR, and so-so
performance. He was probably better off with the Wilson 1000 or the K40. Both
are superior antennas to that little wil.

You are correct, it is possible to cut too much off, and the Channel 1 SWR
will start going up. But, there is nothing terribly wrong with the readings
your getting. It's always nice to get a better match, so I would continue
clipping, but only until you get the Channel 40 SWR down below 1:2. Then
don't worry about it. The Channel 1 SWR is already very good, and you are
never going to notice the slight mismatch at the high end.

That's what I call inflation! Used to be just a nickle.

Your theory is right but your numbers don't make sense to me. If you
snipped off some and the ch40 reading went down... then the ch1 reading
should have increased. By the way... Lil Wils are not much good. They
are notoroius for bad matching characteristics because of their very
short length. The performance of that short an antenna is very poor.

Only if the dip is between 1 and 40. His antenna was too long for
channel 1 so shortening it reduced the SWR across the band.
