Noise in Ford F-150
Anybody have any ideas to lower noise in my FT-857 mounted in my F-150
pickup? S7-S9 noise (engine running, with NB ON) on 17M (Only band I've tried on HF yet). Antenna is an Outbacker mounted on a mount I welded up for my receiver hitch and puts the base of the antenna at about roof level. Quiet as a mouse when truck is shut off. I have similar high noise in a '93 Astro minivan. Is the

This describes the problem, identifies the Ford filter part which is to be installed inside the fuel tank on the pump wiring, and describes the procedure. This is reportedly _not_ a customer-installable fix. I found out about it when my 1996 Ford Ranger was still under original factory warranty. The ford dealer added a fuel pump electrical filter to the fuel pump in the fuel tank. Can't say it did a whole lot of good though, but is better than it was before they added the filter. Who makes the coaxial caps you used ? I'll add that I faced and fixed fuel pump the problem on my '91 Marquis - but that was on 2 meters. Dunno if my fix would have prevented the noise on HF as I didn't run HF mobile. Anyway, I installed a BIG (physically) feed through cap in the trunk in the + line to the pump. I also installed a couple of .1 uf (as I recall they were ..1) caps - one across the power leads at the rig, and one in the blower circuit. I was getting noise from that too. That one was easy to isolate, as the noise was there with the engine off and the vent/AC/heater blower on. My experience is not representative, and it was to solve hash on my 2m/440 rig. A cap *in* the tank should be more effective, in my view. But I figure the more you know about these *()$%# noise problems, the better off you are. |

Update!
After reading the Ford Service Bulletin, I checked to see if it could be the fuel pump. They said to have radio on and then turn key to on position. The fuel pump runs for about 1 second and then stops. If the noise appears for 1 second and disappears, the pump is most likely the source of noise. I did not get any noise until the engine was started. Therefore, it would appear it is something else such as injectors, alternator, etc. Dang! So much for any easy discovery and possible fix. the fuel pump will run for a few seconds when you turn the key on and then stop
because it builds up pressure in the line. when you turn the engine over the pump will start up again to keep the pressure up for all the injectors.it will never stop till you shut the car off . it has a return presure valve in the line to return fuel to the tank...bet it is the pump giving you the noise.. randy ARS: WB4UNA Randy Chavis 247 Goff Court West Columbia S.C. 29172 |
Well, the truck is going in to Ford this coming week. Needs the CD player
replaced and they will install the filter in the fuel tank at no charge, so I might as well have it done. Is anybody aware of any other tech service bulletins for noise? My Ford dealer says if there is a TSB, they will do it as warranty work at no charge. Sure would like to load up on all the RFI bulletins while it's still in warranty!
