If the crystals are the old WW2 crystals that are about an inch
square, the frequency is determined as follows: If the Channel is a 2 digit number, divide the marked frequency by 54 to obtain the fundamental frequency: Channel 32 Marked Frequency 32.2 Mc Fundamental Frequency 32.2/54 = 429.630 MHz If the Channel is a 3 digit number, divide the marked frequency by 72 to obtain the fundamental frequency: Chhannel 381 Marked Frequency 38.1 Mc Fundamental Frequency 38.1/72 = 529.166 MHz Hope this helps and 73, Henry WA0GOZ |

Don't you mean KHz??

Those are all WW2 tank transmitter frequencies and were for 54 X and 72 X multiplications so that it could be FM'd. The Army must have loved old Armstrong, they always used FM even when the well understood capture effect kept killing off their guys. Same reason the Air Force still can't talk to the ground pounder unless they stick an AF guy with an AM rig with them on the ground. Sigh W4ZCB |

I whoopsed. The resulting fundamental frequency I quoted should have
been in KHz or Kc back in those days. 38.1/72 = 0.5291666 Mc or 529.1666 Kc. and 23.2/54 = 0.4296296. In the first example, my dyslexia got me so the numbers are wrong. Sorry. We had a surplus outfit here in Tucson that cut up old Air Force planes at DMAFB (The Boneyard). I bought a Collins KWM-1 from them that came out of a B-47. They were using SSB a long time ago. I wish I had kept that radio as it might have been very widely traveled. Some of those planes were "special"... RB-47s. They were overflying the Soviet Union before the U2s were. I used to be a member of the Association of Old Crows. For more on that see: (http://www.55srwa.org/55_crowstory.html). The author, Col. Bruce Bailey also discussed some of these missions (and mischief) in his book, "We See All", a Pictorial History of the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. I happen to have an inscribed copy (no. 1474 of 1500) of the book. Bruce has a lot more tales at http://www.55srwa.org/55_fhr1.html Caution: Do not read any of his stuff with liquid in your mouth. It will wind up all over your monitor. |

If you were an Old Crow, you still are. By any chance know Duke Knief? Was out to Davis Monthan last year, all those single flight C-141's was sickening. From the factory to the boneyard just to protect some congressmans turf. W4ZCB |

To my regret I was never in the military although I would have been had a Navy recruiter not lied to me about my enlistment. But I guess that's a redundancy. Most of the AOC meetings were lunchtime affairs and I felt guilty leaving work for hours to go out to D-M for them so I quit paying my dues and participating. We did have one memorable dinner meeting where I met Col. Hambleton, who was the guest speaker and protagonist in the book and movie, "Bat 21." Was out to Davis Monthan last year, all those single flight C-141's was sickening. From the factory to the boneyard just to protect some congressmans turf. Just think of it as a jobs program for engineers. |
