/////////////////////////////////////////// ARRL Vice Director, Honorary Vice President Evelyn Gauzens, W4WYR (SK): Posted: 02 Feb 2016 06:17 AM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36091 A beloved member of the extended ARRL family has passed on. Evelyn Gauzens, W4WYR, of Dunedin, Florida, died on January 31. She would have turned 87 this week. An ARRL Life Member, Gauzens served as the Southeastern Division Vice Director for more than 20 years. The ARRL Board of Directors elected her as an Honorary Vice President in 2002. She may be best known in the wider Amateur Radio community for having co-founded the Miami Tropical Hamboree and chairing it for 45 years. Past ARRL President Kay Craigie, N3KN, said that when she became a Vice Director in 1990, Gauzens was there for her as the "go-to" person for newcomers to learn the ropes. /////////////////////////////////////////// Emergency Two-Way Radio Equipment to be Installed at Hospital: Posted: 01 Feb 2016 05:21 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36090 Emergency two-way radio equipment will be installed in St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil thanks to a nearly $2,000 grant from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Emergency Management Director Bryan Husband received permission to apply for the grant during Monday's meeting of the Clay County Commissioners. The equipment will be installed and, should it be necessary, operated by RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) amateur radio operators. According to the Federal Communications, cited by the Amateur Radio Relay League, "RACES members may transmit only messages related to: 1) Impending danger to the public or affecting national defense during emergencies; 2) The immediate safety of individuals, the immediate protection of property, maintenance of law and order, alleviation of human suffering and need, and combating armed attack and sabotage; 3) The dissemination of information to the public from a local civil defense organization or other government or relief organization and; 4) Communications during RACES drills." Husband said that during an emergency, the RACES radio station would be on the air, communicating with those outside Clay County, on behalf of Clay County emergency Management. The grant was approved 3-0 by County Commissioners Paul Sinders, Bryan Allender and Jim Bowman. /////////////////////////////////////////// Odenton/Gambrills: Relocated Hamfest Draws Big Crowd: Posted: 01 Feb 2016 05:20 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36089 It was a Hamfest -- and we aren't talking about pork. The Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club (MMARC) hosted its 22nd Annual Hamfest last Saturday, at Odenton Baptist Church. MMARC is a local club dedicated to the development of Ham operators. Their Hamfest is the club's annual fundraiser. It helps cover the cost of the Annual Field Day Competition and other public services offered by the club. Amateur Radio Emergency Services, or ARES, helps out in the event of an emergency and standard communication systems failure. MMARC Ham radio operators, who are part of ARES, step in and help with communications. Hamfest featured 21 commercial vendors, as well as amateur radio operators and hobbyists sell radio equipment and accessories, computers and software. The weather cooperated drawing 272 paid attendees. Boy Scout troop 755 from Gambrills provided breakfast and lunch. "It was so busy the parking lot was full. People couldn't find parking space," said David Rinker, treasurer for MMARC. Once inside attendees found rows of tables, flea market style, filled with radio equipment and accessories, computers and software. Chuck Olson, a club member from Odenton, was impressed with the turnout. "Everybody has been snow bound and probably glad to get out," Olson said, adding he found a few good deals he couldn't pass up. /////////////////////////////////////////// Satellite Package Carrying Amateur Radio Payloads Released from ISS: Posted: 01 Feb 2016 01:15 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/36088 A package of two satellites carrying Amateur Radio payloads has been deployed into orbit from the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a collaborative Texas A and M and University of Texas at Austin research effort. Built by Texas A and M students, AggieSat4 (AGS4) will release UT's Bevo-2 CubeSat in about a month, once it is far enough away from the ISS. Both schools received support from NASA's Johnson Spaceflight Center (JSC) for the design, construction, testing, and launch phases. The goal of the overarching LONESTAR (Low Earth Orbiting Navigation Experiment for Spacecraft Testing Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking) program is for the two satellites to individually rendezvous with each other and perform docking and undocking maneuvers. |
