CRESTVIEW -- Emergency communications will be maintained during a future
storm that knocks down radio or cellular phone antenna if the City Council
approves a memorandum of understanding with local ham operators. And it
wouldn't cost taxpayers a cent. At the invitation of Councilman JB Whitten,
who observed the North Okaloosa Amateur Radio Club in action during its
recent field day, club President Ron Mahn presented information about its
communications capabilities at a Monday evening council workshop. "In the
event of any emergency call-up from (Okaloosa County) emergency services,
they'll bring up one or more of our members," Mahn said.

Legacy of Memories: As Curtain Comes Down, Hara's Smaller Moments Ring True

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 05:09 PM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/37417

When shovels dug into the Trotwood ground in 1963 to expand the Wampler
Ballarena, the new facility needed a name. Brothers Harold and Ralph
Wampler came up with a simple solution: Take the first two letters of their
first names. Since, Hara has been a household name in the region (and, in
its heyday, the entire entertainment industry). Adding onto the dance hall
built in 1956, the facility grew into a six-building complex that served as
a convention, exposition and sports center on Shiloh Springs Road in
Trotwood. When it opened in 1964, a whole new world of entertainment opened
to the community. "It is a shame we have had to go to Cincinnati and Troy
to enjoy the facilities these boys are putting up here," said Harry
Kiefaber, a Montgomery County commissioner, at the groundbreaking. After
more than six decades of business, the iconic venue will host its last
event - a comic and toy show - on Saturday. Announcement of the closure
inspired recollections across the region. Thousands have sung along with a
favorite band, cheered for their team and commemorated special events at
Hara Arena.

After Nearly Two Years, NASA Regains Contact with Lost Spacecraft:

After attempting to regain contact for nearly two years, NASA has finally
reestablished communications with the sun-studying satellite, STEREO-B. At
6:27 p.m. ET, NASA received a downlink signal from the spacecraft using the
ground-based communication antennas in the Deep Space Network. STEREO-B is
one of two spacecraft that orbit the sun and make up the Solar Terrestrial
Relations Observatory (or STEREO) mission. STEREO-Ahead (STEREO-A) orbits
slightly closer to the Sun than the Earth, and STEREO-Behind (STEREO-B)
orbits at a farther distance from the Sun than the Earth. Together, they
provide NASA with unprecedented views of the far side of the Sun.
