This Week's News IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday 6th November 2016 __________________________________________________ ________________ Amateur Station Licence Examination Thursday next, 10th November, is the final date to apply for the next Amateur Station Licence Examination, which will be held on Thursday 1st December in the ComReg Offices in Dublin. Full details, including entry procedure, examination fee and how to pay the fee on line are available at www.irts.ie/exam . Please note that it is necessary to download the application form from the web page and forward the completed form and the appropriate fee so as to secure a place for the examination. It is also important to note that even If you pay the fee on line you must still complete and forward the application form. Four Exam Reports which were previously published in Echo Ireland are available on the Downloads section of the website at www.irts.ie/downloads under "Studying for the Harmonised Amateur Radio Examination Certificate". These reports contain very useful information for anyone studying for the Licence Examination. Intending candidates are advised to pay particular attention to the syllabus for the examination especially Annexes 1 and 2." __________________________________________________ ________________ Counties Contest On Tuesday next, 8th November, there is a one-hour 80 metres IRTS Counties Contest, running from 20:00 to 21:00 UTC. This is CW event: the SSB version of this contest, held earlier this year, was very well supported, with stations active in 23 EI and GI counties. See www.irts.ie/contests for full rules, including the power limit and permitted frequency range. __________________________________________________ ________________ DXCC Honor Roll The list of EI call signs in ARRL's DXCC Listings is updated every month on the IRTS web site, see www.irts.ie/dxcc for the latest list. We see that one of our best known DXers, Declan EI6FR, who was already in the Mixed Mode and Phone Honor Rolls, has now joined the CW Honor Roll, with 332 DXCC entities confirmed on CW. Well done to Declan! __________________________________________________ ________________ VE7SAR and EI7DAR are Twinned Dundalk Amateur Radio Society and Surrey Amateur Radio Club, British Columbia, Canada are now twinned. The twnning of both clubs was the brain child of Tony EI4DIB on a recent visit to Canada. Throughout the years Tony has been instrumental in teaching radio theory to amateur radio enthusiasts, in the North East, who wished to gain their amateur radio licence. When asked, "what does twinning imply for both clubs?" John VA7XB, replied that it "firstly establishes a social connection and hands across the ocean " between both clubs. www.ei7dar.com The Dundalk Amateur Radio Society will be having a Bring & Buy Sale at its Club House, 113 Castletown Road, Dundalk, County Louth, on Wednesday 16th November at 8.30pm. __________________________________________________ ________________ Cork Radio Club Cork Radio Club will hold their November meeting in Carrigtwohill Community Centre on Wednesday next November 9th at 8pm. The meeting will review the recent participation in the Jamboree on The Air with the Little Island scouts and will discuss some follow up plans. Also on the agenda is the showing of some outstanding DXpedition videos by Dave EI9FBB and Jerry EI6BT. The club's new website will be launched shortly and pictures and stories about past activities would be appreciated. New members are always very welcome and further information can be got by emailing info /at/ corkradioclub.ie. __________________________________________________ ________________ Limerick Radio Club The monthly meeting will take place on Thursday 10th November in the Limerick Institute of Technology at 19:30. All are welcome including short wave listeners. Tom EI3AL will present his latest project the Arduino Morse Keyer. Club updates will include progress on the Wild Atlantic Way and on the club repeaters. There will also be news on the LRC Committee. __________________________________________________ ________________ Talk in Dublin on Space, Amateur Radio & NASA There will be a talk in Dublin on Thursday 17th of November at 7pm in the TOG hackerspace on space and Amateur Radio and Video. Daniel EI9FHB will be explaining how the HAMTV system in Midleton in Cork receives video from the space station during school contacts. Conor Forde from Mullingar will be talking Cube Satellites and ones he recently designed, while Marc O'Griofa from Meath will be explaining his work with NASA on training Astronauts in deep sea simulations. Part of Marc's talk will explain how they operated a 26 minute radio delay, simulating the time delay of missions to Mars, due to the slow speed of radio waves, and how this impacts on mission planning. The talks are free and open to all. Free parking is available in the area. More details on www.tog.ie __________________________________________________ ________________ Soldering Workshop Soldering Workshop for Science Week, Dublin, Sunday 13rd of November. 11:00 to 13:30 Cost 20 Euro, tickets need to be purchased in advance. This hands on workshop will cover various aspects of soldering; from the basic techniques of soldering, to soldering electronic components to make simple circuits. Participants will learn how to solder and finish off the workshop with a kit they can bring home. No electronics skills required. This workshop is suitable for 12 years and up. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. New members or anyone interested in learning more about amateur radio are very welcome to attend. He is there to do electrical work in a local hospital and orphanage but in his spare time he will reactivate his 5H3MB callsign. Logs will be uploaded to Logbook of The World and QSLs should go via the home call. A group of Italian operators will be active as 6V1IS from Dakar, Senegal and as 6V1IS/P from two different islands in the IOTA AF-045 group. Dates are from 7th to 20th November and QSL Manager is IK7JWX. Willi DJ7RJ will be QRV as 3B8/DJ7RJ from Mauritius from 9th November until 6th December. He will operate all bands 160m to 10m and requests that topband enthusiasts look for him on 1826.6 khz. Alan G3XAQ will be back at Kampala, Uganda from 12th to 28th November. Look for him signing 5X1XA on CW including the CQWW DX CW Contest at the end of the month.
