These are the number of current,
unexpired FCC-issued amateur radio licenses held by individuals on the stated dates, and the percentage of the total number of active licenses that class contains. Percentages may not add up to exactly 100.0% due to rounding. These totals do not include licenses that have expired but are in the grace period, nor do they include club, military and other station-only licenses. Effective April 15, 2000, FCC no longer issued new Novice, Technician Plus and Advanced class licenses, so the numbers of those license classes have declined steadily since then. Also since April 15, 2000, FCC has renewed all existing Technician Plus licenses as Technician. It is therefore informative to consider the totals of the two classes, since the Technician class includes a significant number of Technician Plus licenses renewed as Technician. On February 23, 2007, the last Morse Code test element, the 5 wpm receiving test, was eliminated as a requirement. The ARS License Numbers: As of May 14, 2000: Novice- 49,329 (7.3%) Technician - 205,394 (30.4%) Technician Plus - 128,860 (19.1%) General - 112,677 (16.7%) Advanced - 99,782 (14.8%) Extra - 78,750 (11.7%) Total Tech/TechPlus - 334,254 (49.5%) Total all classes - 674,792 As of February 22, 2007: Novice - 22,896 (3.5%) Technician - 293,508 (44.8%) Technician Plus - 30,818 (4.7%) General - 130,138 (19.9%) Advanced - 69,050 (10.5%) Extra - 108,270 (16.5%) Total Tech/TechPlus - 324,326 (49.5%) Total all classes - 654,680 As of May 1, 2007: Novice - 22,183 (3.4%) Technician - 287,676 (43.9%) Technician Plus - 28,303 (4.3%) General - 138,694 (21.2%) Advanced - 68,166 (10.4%) Extra - 110,047 (16.8%) Total Tech/TechPlus - 315,979 (48.2%) Total all classes - 655,069 As of May 14, 2007: Novice - 22,111 (3.4%) Technician - 287,675 (43.9%) Technician Plus - 27,828 (4.2%) General - 139,300 (21.3%) Advanced - 68,036 (10.4%) Extra - 110,231 (16.8%) Total Tech/TechPlus - 315,503 (48.2%) Total all classes - 655,181 As of May 22, 2007: Novice - 22,026 (3.4%) Technician - 287,373 (43.9%) Technician Plus - 27,541 (4.2%) General - 139,693 (21.3%) Advanced - 67,922 (10.4%) Extra - 110,314 (16.8%) Total Tech/TechPlus - 314,914 (48.1%) Total all classes - 654,869 Changes: From May 14, 2000, to February 22, 2007: Novice - decrease of 26,433 Technician - increase of 88,114 Technician Plus - decrease of 98,042 General - increase of 17,461 Advanced - decrease of 30,732 Extra - increase of 29,520 Total Tech/TechPlus - decrease of 9,928 Total all classes - decrease of 20,112 From May 14, 2000, to May 1, 2007: Novice - decrease of 27,146 Technician - increase of 82,282 Technician Plus - decrease of 100,557 General - increase of 26,017 Advanced - decrease of 31,616 Extra - increase of 31,297 Total Tech/TechPlus - decrease of 18,275 Total all classes - decrease of 19,723 From May 14, 2000, to May 14, 2007: Novice - decrease of 27,218 Technician - increase of 82,281 Technician Plus - decrease of 101,032 General - increase of 26,623 Advanced - decrease of 31,746 Extra - increase of 31,481 Total Tech/TechPlus - decrease of 18,751 Total all classes - decrease of 19,611 From May 14, 2000, to May 22, 2007: Novice - decrease of 27,303 Technician - increase of 81,979 Technician Plus - decrease of 101,319 General - increase of 27,016 Advanced - decrease of 31,860 Extra - increase of 31,564 Total Tech/TechPlus - decrease of 19,340 Total all classes - decrease of 19,923 From February 22, 2007, to May 1, 2007: Novice - decrease of 713 Technician - decrease of 5,832 Technician Plus - decrease of 2,515 General - increase of 8,556 Advanced - decrease of 884 Extra - increase of 1,777 Total Tech/TechPlus - decrease of 8,347 Total all classes - increase of 389 From February 22, 2007, to May 14, 2007: Novice - decrease of 785 Technician - decrease of 5,833 Technician Plus - decrease of 2,990 General - increase of 9,162 Advanced - decrease of 1,014 Extra - increase of 1,961 Total Tech/TechPlus - decrease of 8,823 Total all classes - increase of 501 From February 22, 2007, to May 22, 2007: Novice - decrease of 870 Technician - decrease of 6,135 Technician Plus - decrease of 3,277 General - increase of 9,555 Advanced - decrease of 1,128 Extra - increase of 2,044 Total Tech/TechPlus - decrease of 9,412 Total all classes - increase of 189 73 de Jim, N2EY |

The ARRL makes all those numbers available free to all, derived from the FCC license database. US license numbers can be seen also at www.hamdata.com. 73, Len AF6AY |

Is this a US only group or can any coutry join in? This is absolutely not a US-only group. In fact, I would personally be interested in trends in license statistics in other countries. Please can somebody post rec.radio.amateur.moderated's charter to the group. There is a periodic posting to the group that includes posting guidelines. See message ID or http://preview.tinyurl.com/3xpvng [same article at Google]. If you want to see the charter, visit http://www.panix.com/~rram/usenet/rram/ and click on the "Charter" link. Basically, this is a newsgroup that hosts discussion of all aspects of amateur radio, with a few exceptions like commercial or for-sale articles. 73, Steve KB9X |

On behalf of the moderation team, welcome :-) BTW it's good to see another UK callsign here, I was beginning to think I was on my own g For info, the charter can be found here, along with links to other useful information: http://www.panix.com/~rram/usenet/rram/index.html 73 Ivor G6URP |

We've been watching the US statistics because of the recent elimination of Morse code testing. Most of the world dropped code a few years ago. Therefore, it is in foreign countries that more conclusive data might be found. That is, in foreign countries, the results of the experiment may already be in, so to speak. I'm more interested in the general issue of the health of the hobby than the specific correlation with a code requirement. Here in the US, I see potential ham radio operators spending their time with computers and not impressed by the concept of being able to communicate with people all over the world because they can do that by opening their cell phone. I wonder how the population of amateur radio enthusiasts is holding up in countries where there might be less computers but more cell phones. There's a very different dynamic in less-developed countries and I don't know whether it favors the hobby. For example, people might be more motivated to explore amateur radio but unable to do so because equipment is not available. 73, Steve KB9X |
