Default newbie GMRS questions

GMRS uses FRS simplex (direct) frequencies. The only advantage to
having a GMRS setup would be the use of repeaters.

GMRS is allowed up to 5 watts of transmit power,

FRS is only allowed to transmit with up to 500 milliwatts A.K.A. 1/2 watt.

MURS is probably the best choice for short-range local communications, by
Non-Hams.

No license is needed. These radios transmit with up to 2 watts, 4 times the
power of FRS radios!

(MURS) Multi-Use Radio Service Frequencies

95.632 MURS transmitter frequencies. (a) The MURS transmitter channel
frequencies are #1 - 151.820 #2 - 151.880 #3 -
151.940 #4 - 154.570 #5 - 154.600 · These frequencies
were called "dot" frequencies and had required a license to transmit. On
November 12, 2000 the FCC dropped the license requirement and opened them up
just like the FRS frequencies and CB radio. Max power on MURS is limited to
TWO watts. You will be able to talk MUCH farther with MURS radios than with
FRS radios.FRS & GMRS FREQUENCIES
NOTE: Not all FRS Manufacturer's channels correspond with one another. FRS
and GMRS Licenses may contact each other if they wish. They may share some
channels. The "private" squelch channels may not correspond either. Test
your equipment at a distance of at least 100' for compatibility. FRS

GMRS and FRS are both citizens band allocations. GMRS is a licensed radio
service, authorizing higher power and flexibility. FRS is unlicensed, with
significant restrictions. FRS frequencies are interleaved with GMRS

5 w, big deal...if you want to run higher power, get a ham license or a
commercial repeater, etc.

Being a member of the Chamber of Commerce counts as having a license?
What an odd exception.

Harv, if you want to get the GMRS radios do a froogle search for the
Uniden handsets. I recently purchased my two GMRS/FRS handsets,
complete w/ rechargable battery, charging station and belt clip (the
only thing I think its missing is a slot for an ear piece) for $20
online, shipped.

I recently posted questions on whether or not I should shell out the
$80 for my license or not. After many posts, with recommendations,
I've decided to not get the license. It servers no purpose. There is
not instruction given, expertise needed, or private band assigned when
you get your license. Its a cleverly desguised tax by the FCC. And
from what I've research, not enforced, unless you deliberatly interfere
with other peoples communications, and those notices are sent to
license holders or those applying for thier license.
