I don't get the whole "tech savvy" thing with yEnc, Ian. There is plenty of software out there that makes yEnc "invisible". It's not even a factor in any way. My newsreader displays all images and decodes all mp3's, etc., yEnc or no yEnc. I know nothing about it and do nothing for it. Dave If there was a simple and "invisible" plug in for Outlook Express I'd probably install it, but as it stands the majority of people can't be bothered with it so anyone who posts a picture and asks everyone to help them are just shooting themselves in the foot. Well, there's your problem Ian. You're still using Micro$oft Outhouse Express. Free yourself from the tyranny that is MS and liberate your machine with Open Source Software! Scott. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com For want of a "round-tuit" - I've downloaded several distributions of Linux and set aside as many boxes to try them out on, but at the moment I've got a bit busy getting to grips with PIC programming. |

Fact: Most casual computer users that do newsgroups use a Microsoft program like Outlook Express. If you post a picture in yEnc you limit your audience by adding extra steps (and programs) to decode the post. As Jimmy Durante said: "Deez are da conditions dat prevail". yEnc doesn't make the files all that much smaller or easier to decode, it might be worth it for a busy binary newsgroup with a lot of mulit-part messages, but even then the space saving is not impressive. Many people believe that yEnc was developed purely to screw Microsoft. I'm sure something better will come along any month now, no need to change formats every time the wind blows. Ken D. |

Looks interesting, but at £55.00 per year in the States, I think I'll pass on a subscription. Dave |

Thanks for the background, Ken. I guess the next question is: Why is it so hard for MS software to decode yEnc? I'm not a fan of yEnc and don't care if it's used or not, because it's all the same to my Usenet software. But I'm always surprised at how difficult it is for some people, all PC users. Is MS unable or unwilling to include yEnc decoding in Outlook Express? Dave Dave |

Michael, I primarily use Ubuntu Linux, but I do have a Windows 2000 partition that tries to work. I loaded the OS and all my hardware was detected. It was actually easier than loading Windows. I used the built in download utility to download the PAN newsreader. I then went to the easyubuntu.org site and downloaded that utility. Once I ran one small line of code from the easyubuntu instructions, the utility allowed me to install the most commonly used plugins and codecs to enable any non open source multimedia applications including yenc. Now whenever I click on a yenc encoded post PAN just opens it. No muss or fuss. I neither like nor dislike yenc. I just know it works without any problems on my system. I also know I never have liked OutLook Express as a newsreader. Its just not easily customizable for my particular needs. When I was running a MAC I used Hogwasher as my newsreader. None of this is real geeky stuff and it works with older hardware. I just got sick and tired of getting out the credit card every 3 years to pay Microsoft and then find I needed new hardware and other software as well. My wife likes Ubuntu so much she stopped using her MAC. She says it's easier and make more sense to her. Of course there is a cost to all this... free. If you are too lazy to learne how to download and install linux, the ubuntu folks will send you a free CD in the mail if you email them requesting one. Think free, like in, freedom of speech. I downloaded it months ago, but I'm testing another version of Linux (Mandiva) right now. I have looked at various versions of Linux for over 10 years. I have no problem using Linux, and have helped others install it on their computers but the news reader I prefer doesn't support Yenc. It's not an OS issue, but it doesn't matter. I'll continue to delete Yenc when I see it, because I will not change from software that works for me, for someone else's convenience. -- Service to my country? I've fired it up a couple of times but of course have no passwords, so I may have to re-install Linux to make it usable. So...I was wondering which version of Linux you liked? Dave |

Dave Like I said, i am trying out Mandiva right now. The Red Hat I tried a few years ago never did work right. I will install Unbutu on another computer to try it. I have about 20 repairable computers right now, with no OS because the hard drive failed, or the previous owner reformatted the hard drive. I want to compare the different versions side by side, rather than sequentially. I loaned the computer with Mandiva to a friend who is very computer illiterate. he loved it, and got a CDROM with Unbutu Linux and installed it on one of his older computers, and he likes it. There has been a fair amount of discussion on: news:rec.crafts.metalworking about different versions of Linux. Check the Google Groups Archives. http://www.ubuntu.com/ has the full OS free for download, or you can have them mail you a free bootable CDROM with it. If you need any help getting the computer up and running, let me know. -- Service to my country? Been there, Done that, and I've got my DD214 to prove it. Member of DAV #85. Michael A.
