I picked this up for $10!

It is a linear tracking turntable, Sony PS F9 from 1982, and it works!

It plays upright as shown or flat on a table, with headphone and line
outputs, runs on 4 AA batteries. Plays at 45 or 33, 7" or 12" records.
It can even be hung on a wall! Plays just fine through powered computer
speakers, the "big stereo" and my Zenith 10S464 through the phono input.

These are apparently quite rare...try a google search!

Looking for any info or comments...would like to find a manual, owners
or service or both for cheap, but I have found a service manual for
download for $15 if nothing else crops up.

My most pressing questions a

1. How do you clean the stylus or does it wipe itself against some sort
of brush every time it parks?

2. What sort of stylus pressure is it using?

3.By listening, it sound like it is in good shape..the entire unit seems
to have had very little use. I have found a couple of places that appear
to have a replacement stylus...apparently, Audio Technicia, but model
numbers are kind of vague. I guess I could call Garage-A-Records and
chat with them, but any knowledge out there would be much appreciated!

IIRC correctly, this was Audio-Technica's answer to the Discman. Yes, you
were supposed to carry a stack o' records with you and play them on this
thing. I have no idea why Sony chose to sell a version with their name on
it.

runs on 4 AA batteries.

I wonder how long a set of batteries would last. Is there no provision for
an AC adaptor?

Nope. This was in Venice, California.

So far, on used batteries (I was fresh out) I've played about 5-6 lp
sides and 4-5 singles. There is an input for an AC adapter, but I
haven't sorted through my collection to find a suitable one yet.

If the Discman played Compact Discs, I have to wonder about that. This
thing was made in 1982, which is pretty much before the CD made the it
in the mass market, particularly in portables.

You need to display it with a "colored" disc like in the ad at the following link.

I found a PS-F5 at the Minnesota meet several years ago, complete with box and
packing for $40. Neat toy!

Yep, I should do that. I have a copy of the Beatles White Album in white
vinyl, and a couple of "picture discs", but nothing green, blue, red,
etc. Oh, wait a minute, I have a Christmas tree shaped record in green
vinyl, but that won't fit!

Regards,

DAve

PS. Three more album sides and still on the used set of AAs.

It was 1989 before I had to learn to open a CD "jewel" case.
