I think the new ICOM IC-R20 is very disappointing. No trunking, no digital,
and way over priced! What market is this going to appeal to, that has not already been met by many others, at a more reasonable price? If you're considering buying one, hold off for awhile, as I'm sure you will be seeing deep discounts when inventories don't move. Bill Crocker |

Good point Bill, regular scanners are a dime a dozen. I really don't care
that it can record. My experience with the wideband scanners is that they are very slow at scanning. so that's probably the case with the R20. So just what is the the chief selling point of the R20? I'll have to wait for the reviews before I consider something like that. Tim "Bill Crocker" wrote in message ... I think the new ICOM IC-R20 is very disappointing. Sounds like it's going to follow in the Icom R-3 footsteps. The "R-3" doesnt
do much of ANYTHING well...with one exception. It's a terrific way to test batteries for amphour ratings....Eddie "Bill Crocker" wrote in message ... I didn't say it was a scanner. Everyone knows Icom can't build a
scanner...their scan is way to slow. Bill Crocker "Richard G Amirault" wrote in message ... Bill Crocker wrote: : I think the new ICOM IC-R20 is very disappointing. That right. Icom, by their own admissions, make high end receivers. They
have no interest in competing with Uniden and Radio Shack. "Bill Crocker" wrote in message news ![]() I didn't say it was a scanner. Is the scan rate the only thing that determines if it is a scanner or a
receiver? It does scan but slowly. Marvin "Troy R." wrote in message ... That right. Icom, by their own admissions, make high end receivers. No ... a "communications receiver" generally has a wider frequency coverage than a scanner. It may also have more modes of recption than just FM. Scanning is just an added feature, not the prime mode of recption as in a scanner. My Yaesu VR-500 will receive signals in the VHF and UHF TV band. Along with TV sound (wide FM) many wireless mics are scattered in those freqs. Also it will receive broadcast AM & FM stations, and shortwave stations. A far cry from a 'normal' scanner. I have a handheld scanner with continous coverage from 100khz to 2.060Ghz with modes NFM, WFM, AM and SSB known as 'Trident TR-2400' and sold under other brand other names such as 'Albrecht AE300'(wich is mine). And I bet this IS a 'normal' scanner. It scans with 24 steps/sec with preprogrammed or selfprogrammed stepwidth of 1-999khz from every frequency you want it to start. On the other hand the ICOM PCR-1000 -wich has very good scanning capabilities- is named a 'communications receiver' by ICOM. So where to make a dividing line....? :-) It's just the way _you_ use it. odo |

IMHO, I think the most disappointing aspects of the new Icom IC-R20 is
lack of extra bandwidth/filter options (if the specs we're seeing are the final version? It looks like it just has one bandwidth option per mode). Considering the a wide freq coverage, 150KHz-3.3GHz. The AOR 8200MKIII has more filter options & it's coverage is up to 3.0GHz, as an example. AM N, AM W, NFM, SNFM, WFM, USB, LSB, CW.
