You won't be happy. All currently available, digital capable scanners, have
the same issue with Detroit, and Genesee County, and their simulcast setup
on MPSCS.

Dear Bill N8JOS:

An alternative to using the Genesee County control channel (with attendant
distortion) is to use the Owosso control channel (if you are on the west
side), a Saginaw control channel (if you are up north), or the Holly control
channel (if you are in the south part of the county). Each of the near-by
systems has much reduced distortion and "carries" most of the Genesee County
traffic.

If one is in Burton, I do not know what will work.

I am using a BCD396T with a RS 800 MHz (whip) antenna.

Regards, Mac

Something weird is going on. On Radio Reference, in the Michigan forum,
they're suddenly able to receive Detroit's Site #701 on Radio Shack
scanners, but none of the Uniden models...so they say. I'm still looking
for facts, as it's just a few claiming this right now. Go back and look
over the post. Tell them what you've been though with yours.

Uniden is aware of the problems associated with the Detroit #701 system, and
claims a fix is in the works. Not sure how long it will take.

Here is the response I got From the HEAD person of The GENESEE COUNTY
911 Headquarters .. He even includes his e-mail address

Mr. Turner from Michigan Frequency Coordination referred you to me as he
seems to be unable to satisfy you with his detailed and accurate response.
Yes, we do have a new 800 MHz system in Genesee County and we are
being listened to successfully by hundreds of citizens and all news
groups. We have nothing to "hide" as you insinuate but you need better
equipment which can be purchased at Radio Shack and several other
outlets. If you are really an active Amateur Radio Operator you should
have friends able to tell you this. I have also included a website that
might help you.

By the way, I donnot have a 2096 anymore, I turned it in for a REFUND..
it took Lloyd 3 weeks to respond.. I got my Radio Shack Refund from
Texas 2 WEEKS ago!

Dear Bill N8JOS (aka "No One"):
The APCO 25 digital system (which is what is being used in Michigan)
will not sound like (have the frequency fidelity nor amplitude smoothness)
of an FM system. (at least not when listened to on the available lower cost
radios.) The digital system is, well, digital and is quantized at a
none-too-fast rate.

In short, the "new" system does not sound like the systems of old.
Fortunately, humans are able, if they are willing, to understand less than
faithful reproductions of the human voice. My students once produced a two
bit quantization of human speech. It was not clear, but it was
understandable. In the early days of the use of SSB, some people had
difficulty in understanding the signals. I have long observed that some
people are much better at accommodating to less than perfect reproductions
than other people.

I speculate that you may be one of the few for whom signals must be
clear in order to be satisfactory. In time, lower cost receivers will
become better. Stay tuned.

I am Not Talking about The AUDIO SOUND..( fidelity )

I am refering to the FACT that EVERY other Word is Heard on the System.

It doesnot make sense to have a system where if a SENTENCE spoken is 20
words long and all the system rebroadcast is 12 of those words .

The TRANSMISSIONS donnot Make any Sense .
Example.

I am Chasing a Blue Pontiac on I-75

The words Heard on the Pro2096 would be

am a pontiac 75

I never hear the words I / Chasing / a/ Blue / on/ 1-

It Was chopping off WORDS

I tried win96

I had the Scanner for over a Month.

Radio Shack Repair in Buffalo,Ny Had the 2096 for a week on that time .
Thats where the TECH said He was when he Called me and SAID, THAT THE
PRO2096 ISNOT compatible with SIMULCAST APCO 25 System in Genesee county

Needless to say.. I DONNOT have That Scanner anymore . Radio Shack sent
me My $450.00 Back
