Do any of you have any recomendations on an appropriate speaker for my R-8?
I've heard from some the the new inexpensive computer speakers are a good alternate to an expensive ICOM or Yeasu communication receiver speaker. Any opinions? Charlie |

Yep! I'm sitting here listening to a Drake right now with an Optimus
powered speaker from Radio Shack. Works great. Most any powered speaker should work fine, not just RS. I went to their site to give you page info and had to click whether to allow or deny cookie setting about - well too many - times! If you have your security settings very high you may want to find another site! ========== CA wrote: Do any of you have any recomendations on an appropriate speaker for my R-8? Charlie When I had an R8 I used a bose VS-100 center channel speaker with it. I used to get them on ebay for about $50 with shipping. |

Be advised that Radio Shack is now carrying RCA brand, though I'm told they are the same and that RCA manufactured the Optimius brand also. |

Get one of those shelf systems (Aiwa, Panasonic, whatever) at a garage
sale and throw away the electronics and just keep the speakers. A 4" speaker in a closed back plastic box sounds very pleasant. Avoid 2-way speakers has they just make the noise louder. Be advised that Radio Shack is now carrying RCA brand, though I'm told they are the same and that RCA manufactured the Optimius brand also. I don't really see a purpose in using a powered speaker. One has to assume that either the receiver puts out enough power, or at the very least the powered speaker won't add much in amplification. Radio Shack merely seems to be rebranding their stuff. So years ago, they came up with the design for those small speakers, and put their "Optimus" name on it. But then they put "RCA" on it because they could buy the use of the name, and they must have assumed "RCA" would have more drawing power. Given that RCA is a name that can be rented at this point, it looks tawdry nowadays. Here in Canada, the same speakers are being sold under the "Centrios" name at Radio Shack. So while the speakers have gone through some changes since they first came on the market as "Minimus-7" a quarter century ago, it's more or less the same speaker and basically still from Radio Shack. I have a pair of Radio Shack Minimus-7's that I picked up here and there at a garage sales, and I'd use them over a lot of the speakers that come with cheaper all in one stereos. They are my "computer speakers" and I use them with an amplifier from a small bookshelf system that I paid five dollars for. But I left the speakers there, since they most definitely were not better than the Minimus-7s. Many years ago when I worked a short stint at
Rat Shack, whenever the Minimus-7's went on sale, hams and SWLs came out of the woodwork to get them. --Mike L. "DesignGuy" wrote in message news:A_Hod.75705$V41.1847@attbi_s52... I also have one of the smaller Optimus (also cast aluminum cabinet) that I use with a scanner. I purchased two of the 7's new, the rest came from garage and estate sales for nickels and dimes. RM~ |
